What is Hummingbird Farm?

For most of my life, I had a dream about a way of living with all beings aware of their connection to each other and feeling reverence for all of life. I lived this dream of regarding all life as sacred for many years and in many places. It began in Los Angeles and moved with me to New York City, to Michigan, back to New York, and then to North Carolina. In every place I lived, I created and recreated the dream of Hummingbird Farm. I talked about it, wrote about it, and prayed for it.

In 1995, I began working as an animal communicator and spent time at Spring Farm in Upstate NY, a beautiful sanctuary/learning center that was the living picture of my dream and it changed my life forever. I realized that my dream farm would come to me, and the animals would come to the farm when they needed a home and healing. And the animals would be the teachers, the healers of people who came to the farm, as they healed themselves. I would be the facilitator, guided by the animals. Suddenly the details of my dream became so clear, and it gave me the courage to just start and not wait for everything to fall into place perfectly. I filed the paperwork to give birth to the nonprofit Hummingbird Farm.

We started in a rented log cabin on 10 acres of land with 2 cats and 2 llamas. I began facilitating classes and holding ceremonies, and animals began coming. We moved to some beautiful land with a big barn, fences and pastures, and the Rocky River on the border and soon grew to 5 llamas, 2 cats, 2 dogs, 11 goats, 4 miniature horses, and an alpaca. The animal population changes as animals live out their lives and new animals come but it always seems to come out to 20-something animals living here.

Over our first 25 years many animals showed up in often miraculous ways and many people came to Hummingbird Farm to meet them and spend time on this sacred land. We were busy. Aside from caring for all the animals through sickness and health, we held Fall Festivals, fire ceremonies, animal communication classes, Reiki classes, volunteer workdays, and kid’s days. At the same time, I was doing many consultations a week, giving lectures, and facilitating classes at the farm and all over the US and Canada.

I look at it now and wonder where I got all that energy. I felt the need to stop for a while, to rest, to spend all my energy caring for the animals and letting that heal me and help me to find a new direction. I remember many years ago when I was feeling overwhelmed and thought I could just quit. My teacher llama, Inka, said to me “It’s good that you’ve surrendered, but you can’t quit.” And I never have quit or wavered on my commitment to this land and the animals and to offering the gifts they bring to other people, I just wanted to find a new way to share it with others. So, I surrendered to let what was to be come to me.

For the moment, I’m no longer facilitating classes or doing consultations. That may change in the future, who knows? But for the last couple of years, I’ve been solely focused on the land and the animals and feeling a deeper connection with them. The Hummingbird Farm Board and I are ready to open things up again for others to experience.

You can check out the Events page to find upcoming opportunities to visit the farm. It will be updated monthly.

There is a newsletter that comes out 4 times a year and you can find a link to it here or sign up to have it delivered to your inbox.

And pictures, there will be lots of pictures of the animals and people on the farm.

I'm looking forward to the new adventure unfolding right here, on this website, and you are invited to join in. We send love and blessings to you.
